Hair Extensions Care

Caring for hair extensions involves a fair bit of work and attention. Mercedes Hair Extensions Studio in Roslyn, Long Island knows just how much effort is involved, so we’ve put together some tips to make it easier for you.

  • Follow the instructions for hair extension care given by your stylist. Hair extension salon personnel are well versed in all the techniques for proper care so they should be your first source for information.
  • Keep your extensions clean. Just like human hair, they can get tangled up with an excessive build up of dirt and sweat. You should wash your hair extensions after every activity that can leave residue like exercising or swimming. You should also brush your hair in a downward motion in order to smoothen out any tangles before you wash it.
  • Use only a good quality shampoo. You can ask the hair extension salon stylist which ones are best for you. Keep in mind that some hair extensions–particularly the less expensive ones–can swell up and get tangled when they absorb water quickly. The best way to avoid this is by wetting the hair gradually and brushing it gently before you wash it completely.
  • Style your hair by brushing it gently with a soft bristled brush. You should start at the ends of the strand and work your way up gently using only downward strokes. You should brush your hair 2 or 3 times daily, but be careful not to be too harsh. Also try to avoid heat whenever possible as it can greatly reduce the lifespan of the extensions. This applies to the use of blow dryers and curling irons as well. It’s best to simply let your hair dry naturally.
  • Wear swimming cap or keep your hair out of the water entirely. The chlorine and the salt can cause extensions to become tangled and matted. It may be best to tie your hair into a ponytail when swimming or exercising.
  • Make sure that you hair extensions are as dry as possible before you go to sleep. In addition, you may also want to wrap your hair or tie it up loosely in order to keep it from getting tangled up.
  • Use a good quality leave-in conditioner. This will help keep both your real hair and your hair extensions soft. Watch that you don’t overdo it as conditioner build up can cause tangles.
  • Finally, do not perm, color or otherwise treat your hair extensions. It would be best to leave those tasks up to your stylist at the hair extension salons you frequent.
